Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery

Novi Pazar, Raška · Serbia

UNESCO World HeritageOf exceptional importance

The first great endowment of Stefan Nemanja, built on a hill above Novi Pazar — according to tradition as a vow to Saint George for his release from captivity. It takes its name from the two bell towers, the “pillars” (stupovi), on the west side of the church. After centuries of desolation the monastery has been restored and is inhabited again. It is part of the “Stari Ras and Sopoćani” property on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
