Heritage at risk
Serbian monumental heritage is exposed to demolition, arson, neglect and oblivion — above all outside the homeland, but within it as well. This part of the database singles out monuments that are endangered, in ruins or being restored after destruction.
The medieval monuments in Kosovo and Metohija, Serbia — Visoki Dečani, the Patriarchate of Peć, Our Lady of Ljeviš and Gračanica — have been on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2006. In the March 2004 violence in Kosovo and Metohija more than thirty Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries were damaged or destroyed, among them Our Lady of Ljeviš and the Monastery of the Holy Archangels in Prizren.
In the wars of the 1990s Žitomislić Monastery and the Cathedral Church in Mostar were destroyed; the monastery has been rebuilt and the cathedral is being restored. Many roadside memorials are decaying without protection, cut off from the roads along which they were raised. Every entry in the database records the condition of the monument, so that it is clear where help is most needed.
