Koznik Fortress

Aleksandrovac, Rasina, Kopaonik · Serbia

In ruins

A medieval town on a conical hill 921 metres high above the Rasina river, on the slopes of Kopaonik, most probably built in the time of Prince Lazar. At Koznik the prince issued a charter to the Great Lavra of Saint Athanasius on Mount Athos in 1381, Princess Milica stayed here, and in 1405 Despot Stefan granted the surrounding villages to Čelnik Radič Postupović. The Ottomans took the town in 1439, returned it to Despot Đurađ under the Peace of Szeged in 1444 and conquered it for good in 1454–1455. It has been partly conserved and is protected as a cultural monument of great importance.
