Stalać Fortress — Todor’s Tower

Stalać, Ćićevac, Pomoravlje · Serbia

In ruins

The remains of a medieval town above the South Morava, near its confluence with the West Morava, of which only a wall of the keep survives — known locally as Todor’s Tower. Tradition holds that the town was built by Prince Lazar, together with a church of which only a bell cast in Milan in 1384 remains. The fall of Stalać to the Ottomans is sung in the folk poem “The Death of Vojvoda Prijezda”: the defender of the town leaps into the Morava with his wife Jelica rather than be taken captive. The association “Todor of Stalać” has launched an initiative to restore the fortress.
