Golubac Fortress
Golubac, Đerdap · Serbia
Of exceptional importance
A medieval town on high cliffs on the right bank of the Danube, at the very entrance to the Đerdap gorge, built in the 14th century. It consists of a front, a rear and an upper town with a citadel, ten towers and two large gates. For centuries it was a battlefield between Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, until the Ottoman garrison handed it over to Prince Mihailo Obrenović in 1867. The fortress has been thoroughly restored over the past decade.
