Monument on Čegar

Čegar, Niš, Nišava District · Serbia

A memorial on the site of the Battle of Čegar of May 1809, in which Vojvoda Stevan Sinđelić, rather than fall into Ottoman hands, fired into the powder magazine of his trench. The first marker was placed there in 1878, after the liberation of Niš, and the present tower-shaped monument was built in 1927 for the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation. Sinđelić’s bust was placed in a niche of the monument in 1938.
