Ružica Church

Belgrade, Kalemegdan, Belgrade Fortress · Serbia

The Church of the Virgin in the lower town of Belgrade Fortress, below the Zindan Gate. An older church of the same name existed in the time of Despot Stefan Lazarević; the Ottomans destroyed it when they conquered Belgrade in 1521. The present church was created in 1867–1869 by converting a gunpowder store into a military church, and it was restored in 1925. Its chandeliers were made by soldiers from cartridge cases and parts of weapons from the First World War.
