Monastery of the Mother of God of Hvosno

Studenica, Istok, Metohija · Serbia

Of exceptional importance

The remains of a monastery also known as Studenica of Hvosno, at the foot of Mokra Gora, twenty kilometres north of Peć. From 1219 it was the seat of the Bishopric of Hvosno, one of the seven founded by Saint Sava, and from 1381 of a metropolitanate; the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin was built in the third decade of the 13th century on the foundations of an older basilica. After the Great Migration of 1690 the monastery was abandoned, and its stone was carried off to build houses and towers in the surrounding villages. It was excavated in 1930 and in 1966–1970, when its foundations were conserved; it is protected as a cultural monument of exceptional importance.
