Kovilj Monastery

Kovilj, Novi Sad, Šajkaška, Bačka · Serbia

A monastery dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, whose founding tradition attributes to Saint Sava. It certainly existed by the end of the 16th century; after being destroyed by the Ottomans during the Great Turkish War it was restored at the beginning of the 18th century, and the present church of dressed stone was built in 1741–1749. From 1772 its archimandrite was Jovan Rajić, the first modern Serbian historian. Because of its beauty it is called the “jewel of Bačka”, and it has been under state protection since 1949.
