Vraćevšnica Monastery

Vraćevšnica, Gornji Milanovac, Šumadija · Serbia

The endowment of Čelnik Radič Postupović, a nobleman of Despot Stefan Lazarević, dedicated to Saint George; the church was built before 1428 and its wall paintings were completed in 1431. Tradition holds that Radič built the monastery in thanksgiving because all the men of a nearby village returned alive from the Battle of Kosovo, which is why the village was named Vraćevšnica (“the place of returning”). Karađorđe, Milan Obrenović and Dositej Obradović met here in 1810, and at an assembly held in the monastery in 1818 Kragujevac was chosen as the capital of the Principality of Serbia.
