Rača Monastery

Bajina Bašta, Podrinje · Serbia

A monastery in the canyon of the Rača river, seven kilometres south of Bajina Bašta, whose foundation is attributed to King Stefan Dragutin. From the 16th to the 18th century it was home to the Rača school of scribes, which produced Kiprijan, Jerotej and Hristifor of Rača and Gavril Stefanović Venclović, making Rača one of the most important centres of Serbian literacy. During the Great Turkish War in 1689 the Ottomans devastated the monastery, and after being burnt several times it was rebuilt in 1826.
