Church of St Luke in Kotor
Kotor, Bay of Kotor · Montenegro
One of the oldest churches of Kotor, built in 1195 — according to the founders’ inscription on the west façade — in the time of Grand Župan Nemanja and his son Vukan. Under Venetian rule it was Roman Catholic, and in the mid-17th century it was returned to the Orthodox; in 1768 the Venetian provveditore recorded that the liturgy was celebrated there every day in the Serbian language. The iconostasis is the work of Dimitrije, founder of the Rafailović school of painting of the Bay of Kotor, and the chapel of Saint Spyridon was added in the 18th century. It stands in the old town of Kotor, within a UNESCO World Heritage property.
